STANTON MOORE'S SPIRIT OF NEW ORLEANS DRUM CAMP
- IN PERSON -
DECEMBER 9 - 11, 2022
Hi everyone, I had a blast with all of you in New Orleans. I hope you all had a great time as well. I’m reaching out to let you all know that SONO 10 will be December 9-11. I am offering a Super Early Bird rate to all SONO 9 attendees.
I hope all of you can make it next year and I’m already looking forward to SONO 10!
WHERE
New Orleans Jazz Museum
400 Esplanade Ave New Orleans LA 70116
WHEN
December 9th - 11th, 2022
Each attendee will have the option to rent a practice kit or bring their own practice pad or practice pad kit. There will be four one and a half hour sessions each day. Some of the topics we will cover will be several styles and beats that I believe you'll need to know when you are playing with people in the real world. Some of you may have encountered some of these grooves and may even feel comfortable with them already. If so, you can "check that" off your personal checklist. But, I'll also be demonstrating some embellishments and nuances that even the more advanced players can work on to enhance what they are already able to play. I will be sending PDFs in advance of the material that we will cover.
We'll be covering the following:
- 16th Note Funk with One Hand
- Improving Your Shuffle
- The Halftime Shuffle
- The Triplet Shuffle
- Samba
- Bossa Nova
- Mozambique
- Train Beats
- Improving Your Swing Feel
- Ballad with Brushes
- 5 Meters Tunes Based off the Ratcliff Beat
- New Orleans Traditional Second Line and Big Chief
I've found that these grooves pop up in a lot of gigging and recording situations and even if they don't, understanding these beats will improve your groove in general and will also work on coordination and independence that you can apply to so many other things you may want to learn.
I will of course be fielding any questions you may have on these topics or any other subjects you may want to cover.
Johnny Vidacovich, Shannon Powell and John Wooton will be available for private lessons on the premises at the rate $150 an hour. This year, James Singleton will be available for private lessons as well. If you choose to pay for a lesson with James, you'll be able to play with and get feedback from a world-class bass player who has played with a ton of your favorite drummers including Johnny Vidacovich, Herlin Riley, Shannon Powell and James Black! To schedule your private lessons, please email Adam Kelly [email protected]
After you sign up, you will be redirected to a camp attendee information page with a form that should be filled out, some of my New Orleans suggestions and pdfs of some of the material we will be covering.

About Stanton Moore
New Orleans native Stanton Moore is a dedicated drummer, performer and educator especially connected to the city, its culture and collaborative spirit. For the past 25 years Moore has dedicated himself to touring the world and bringing the culture and message of his hometown to a global audience.
In the early ‘90s, Moore helped found the New Orleans-based essential funk band Galactic. Galactic continues to amass a worldwide audience via recording and touring globally. They have averaged 100 shows a year over the last quarter-century. In late November of 2018 Moore and the other 4 members of Galactic bought the famed New Orleans music club Tipitina’s. They have played there on most major holidays for the last 20 years including Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, Halloween and New Years' Eve earning the nickname “The Tipitina’s House Band”. When presented with the opportunity to take over ownership of the club, they jumped at the chance. They plan to protect and preserve the legacy of the venue ongoing.
After graduating from Brother Martin high school under the tutelage of Marty Hurley, Moore earned his bachelor’s degree in music and business from Loyola University. He stays involved in education by constantly presenting clinics, master classes and private lessons all over the world. Moore has written two books, both of which won the Modern Drummer reader’s poll for book of the year. His second book, Groove Alchemy was included in Modern Drummer’s list of top 25 drum books of all time. In 2016, he started his online drum lesson site, StantonMooreDrumAcademy.com to present the curriculum he has developed. Starting in 2019 he has accepted the position of artist in residence teaching drum set at LSU.
Moore has released 9 records under his own name and 10 recordings with Galactic. He has demonstrated his outstanding versatility on stage and/or on record with a vast array of artists in multiple genres. Some of these artists include Irma Thomas, Corrosion of Conformity, Robert Walter, Garage-a-Trois, The New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) and Boots Riley’s (the Coup) Street Sweeper Social Club, Will Bernard, Diane Birch, Alec Ounsworth (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), Joss Stone, Anders Osborne, Johnny Sansone, John Scofield, Karl Denson, George Porter, Jr., and Leo Nocentelli (of the Meters), Charlie Hunter, Warren Haynes, John Medeski and Chris Wood (of Medeski, Martin and Wood), Donald Harrison Jr., Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dr. John, Tab Benoit and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to name a few.
Stanton Moore's 3-day "Spirit of New Orleans" drum camp invites students of all ages and playing abilities to enjoy a hands-on drumming experience where they will learn from Stanton and his special teaching guests. This year, Herlin Riley will be presenting the Sunday master class. Moore's mentor and New Orleans legend, Johnny Vidacovich along with other special guest instructors Shannon Powell and John Wooton will all be on hand for private lessons. Students work alongside SONO teachers on their own individual practice drum sets to amass a total of 24 hours of real playing time over the course of this incredible camp. SONO is a fun, low pressure environment where students can learn from some of the world's best players and educators.
